Money Frog Feng Shui: Placement Do's and Don'ts

Gold-color three-legged money frog figurine with a coin in its mouth, sitting on a heap of coins

Squat, three-legged, and holding a coin in its mouth, the money frog often sits on a pile of coins or ingots. In money frog feng shui, this figure — also called Chan Chu or jin chan, the three-legged toad — is a Chinese symbol of wealth and good fortune. These meanings belong to tradition: no figurine can guarantee money.

The legend in brief

In one popular telling, Liu Hai, a figure in Taoist lore, lures the toad with a string of coins. Versions of the story differ, so it is better understood as a common folk tale than as a single fixed account. The coins help explain why the creature appears so often in imagery associated with wealth.

The toad is also tied to the moon in older Chinese lore. That lunar association sits alongside its wealth symbolism; the figure does not have just one story attached to it. Although commonly called a frog in English product names, the traditional three-legged creature is usually described as a toad.

Its coin imagery has a wider cultural context. Our guide to five emperor coins meaning discusses another traditional use of coins as symbols. A coin shown on a toad figurine should not automatically be identified as one of those particular coins.

Placement customs

Placement advice varies among households and feng shui practitioners. The following are commonly repeated customs, rather than requirements with a proven financial result. Treat the direction of the figure as part of its symbolic story: an inward-facing toad suggests wealth entering the home.

Commonly recommended

  • Near the main entrance: position the toad facing inward, as if it were hopping into the home.
  • On a low shelf: many people favor a lower display surface rather than a high perch.
  • On a stable surface: leave enough room for the base and for dusting around it.
  • A daytime variation: some people turn the coin side out during the day as part of their own placement custom.

Commonly avoided

  • Facing out the door: this runs against the usual inward-facing symbolism.
  • Bathrooms: traditional placement advice commonly excludes these rooms.
  • Kitchens: these are also commonly avoided in money toad placement customs.
  • A high or precarious spot: custom often favors a lower position, while practical display care calls for a secure one.

The daytime coin-facing practice is a variation, not a rule you need to combine with every other suggestion. If you prefer a fixed arrangement, the commonly recommended inward-facing position gives you a straightforward way to follow the symbolism. There is no need to keep adjusting a figurine in expectation of a financial outcome.

For a practical placement check, open the entrance door fully before choosing the spot. Keep the figure away from the door's swing, a crowded passage, or the edge of a shelf. A low shelf still needs to be somewhere the piece will not be kicked or knocked over. These are ordinary display precautions, separate from the traditional meaning of its direction.

Choosing a material

Brass or metal: consider the listed dimensions and weight when choosing a shelf. For routine dusting, start with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush for small recesses. Avoid abrasive pads, and check care instructions before applying a metal polish, since a finish may require different handling.

Resin: a soft cloth or brush can remove surface dust without scraping details. Avoid harsh cleaners unless the maker specifically approves them. Material alone does not tell you a decoration's dimensions, so do not assume an unmeasured option will fit a narrow ledge.

Liuli glass: our guide to liuli glass explains the material terminology in more detail. For display, allow space around the piece and check that the surface can support its listed weight. Lift from underneath rather than using a projecting detail as a handle; place it down gently.

Wood: dust with a soft, dry cloth and avoid soaking. Keep wooden objects away from prolonged dampness and strong heat. A wooden frog may also be an instrument, so identify its form and purpose before treating it as a traditional money toad.

For any figurine, move it to a clear, stable surface before cleaning the shelf beneath it. Support the body or base, and avoid pulling on a coin or another projecting part. Choose the material for its appearance, care needs, and fit within your space; none guarantees a particular result.

Money frog feng shui: pieces from Buddha Stones

Our selection includes three decorative options associated with the money toad and a separate wooden frog instrument. The listed measurements help you assess a display space, while the distinction between a symbolic figurine and an instrument helps you choose the right kind of object.

Brass Three Legged Money Frog

Our Brass Three Legged Money Frog is brass. The small option measures 7.4 × 3.6 × 4.2 cm / 2.9 × 1.4 × 1.7 in; the large measures 8.6 × 4.6 × 5.3 cm / 3.4 × 1.8 × 2.1 in. These dimensions are length, width, and height. Listed weights are 80 g and 126.5 g.

Compare the full base dimensions with your intended shelf, leaving room around the figure rather than matching the shelf depth exactly.

FengShui Wealth Lucky Frog Decoration

The FengShui Wealth Lucky Frog Decoration is resin and is offered as options 1, 2, and 3. The page does not list measurements for these options, so for a narrow entrance shelf, compare the photos with the space before deciding where it will stand.

The familiar placement custom can guide its direction, while the shelf itself should provide a secure base with room for routine dusting.

Feng Shui Frog Coins Liuli Crystal Art Piece

The Feng Shui Frog Coins Liuli Crystal Art Piece is listed as liuli glassware/crystal glass. Colorful options measure about 9 × 9 × 8 cm, 13 × 12 × 11 cm, and 20 × 19 × 13.5 cm. The Yellow option measures about 13 × 12 × 11 cm.

Listed weights are about 830 g for Colorful at 9 × 9 × 8 cm, 2000 g for either color at 13 × 12 × 11 cm, and 5800 g for Colorful at 20 × 19 × 13.5 cm. Check the shelf's capacity as well as its dimensions.

Mini Wooden Croaking Frog Guiro

Our Mini Wooden Croaking Frog Guiro is wood, with sizes of 6.5 × 4 × 4 cm, 8.5 × 5 × 5 cm, and 14.5 × 8 × 8 cm. Run the provided stick along the ridges on its back from rear to front to make a croaking sound.

This is a different, playful folk instrument, not a three-legged toad, although it is sold with a feng shui name. The money toad's placement customs need not govern where you keep it. Give the instrument a stable resting place with enough space to lift it and use the stick.

For a traditional money toad, a secure low shelf near the entrance, facing inward, is a clear starting point. Let the arrangement express the custom you have chosen, with practical care for the object and no expectation that its position can guarantee money.
