How to Measure Wrist Size for Bracelets and Bangles

Wrist size is the circumference of the wrist just below the wrist bone. Wrap a soft measuring tape around that point, keep it snug without pressing into the skin, and read where the tape meets its starting end. Paper and a ruler can stand in for a tape.
Knowing how to measure wrist size gives you a starting number. Choosing a bracelet also means checking its closure: circumference, diameter, and a recommended wrist measurement describe different things.
Measuring your wrist
- Gather your tools. Use a flexible measuring tape, or cut a strip of paper and have a ruler and pencil ready. Avoid stretchy material, which can change length as you pull it.
- Find the position. Hold your hand relaxed and place the tape or paper just below the wrist bone, toward your forearm. Keep it level around your wrist.
- Wrap snugly. Bring the tape around until it touches your skin without squeezing. Do not leave a finger underneath; you will add room for your preferred fit afterward.
- Read the measurement. Note the number where the tape meets its beginning, in centimeters or inches. With paper, mark the overlap, flatten the strip, and measure from its starting edge to the mark.
- Check the other wrist. Measure it separately if you plan to wear the bracelet there. Use the measurement for the wrist that will actually wear it.
- Measure twice. Remove the tape and repeat. If the readings differ, check the position and tension before recording your final number and its unit.
Adding room for fit
The additions below are a common rule of thumb for choosing a bracelet circumference from a bare wrist measurement. They are approximate preferences, rather than a universal sizing chart.
| Fit style | What to add |
|---|---|
| Snug | About 0.5 in / 1.3 cm |
| Comfortable | About 0.75 in / 2 cm |
| Loose | About 1 in / 2.5 cm |
For example, a 6-inch wrist plus 0.75 inch suggests a bracelet circumference of about 6.75 inches for a comfortable fit. Test that length with a paper loop to judge the extra room.
If a product gives a recommended wrist circumference, compare your bare wrist measurement directly with it. Do not automatically add the allowance above to that recommendation.
Elastic stretch strands
An elastic bracelet needs enough room to sit comfortably after it passes over your hand. Stretch helps with putting it on; it does not make every strand suitable for every wrist.
Check whether the size describes the bracelet itself or the wrist it is intended to fit. Beads occupy space inside a strand, so its overall length alone may not describe the available room accurately. Avoid choosing a smaller size on the assumption that the elastic should stay stretched during wear. Roll a stretch strand gently over your hand instead of pulling one section far outward.
Adjustable cord bracelets
For an adjustable cord, start with the recommended wrist measurements and check that yours falls within them. The opening also needs to pass over your hand before you tighten the cord.
Adjust the bracelet to your preferred position without drawing the cord tight against your skin. The intended wrist measurements do not necessarily tell you the maximum opening. If your wrist measurement is near an endpoint, do not assume the cord can extend beyond the measurements supplied on the product page.
Closed bangles: measure across your hand
A closed bangle must pass over your hand, so the hand, not the wrist, decides the fit. Bring your thumb toward your little finger as if sliding a bangle on. Measure across the widest part of your palm in that position, then compare that width with the bangle’s inner diameter.
Keep width and circumference separate: a tape wrapped around your hand gives a different measurement from a ruler placed across it. Follow the particular bangle’s sizing guidance, especially when choosing between nearby diameters. A bangle that seems suitable beside your wrist may still be too small to pass over your hand. Do not force it over your knuckles.
Adjustable open bangles
An open bangle has a gap, so its fit differs from a closed ring that slides over the entire hand. Check the listed diameter and any stated adjustment guidance together.
The word “adjustable” does not establish an unlimited size range. A diameter is also not a wrist circumference. Avoid treating the opening as permission to bend the bangle repeatedly or reshape it sharply. If no minimum or maximum wrist measurement is supplied, the stated diameter alone cannot confirm the full adjustment range.
Multi-wrap malas
A multi-wrap mala needs room for several loops beside one another. Check the intended number of wraps and any recommended wrist circumference before using its total length to estimate fit.
Dividing the full strand length by the wrap count gives only a rough guide. Bead size, the space the loops occupy, and elastic tension can change how the wrapped strand sits. Use the product’s specific wrapped-wrist measurement when provided. A tassel length is a separate detail and should not be added to the length available for wrapping.
How to measure wrist size: common mistakes
- Adding comfort room while measuring, then adding it again when selecting a size.
- Confusing centimeters with inches, or millimeters with centimeters.
- Comparing a wrist circumference directly with a bangle diameter.
- Choosing a closed bangle from wrist size without checking the hand.
- Assuming an adjustable closure or elastic strand will fit beyond its published measurements.
Matching the measurements to our bracelets
Braided jade adjustable cord
Our Handmade Braided Yellow Green Osmanthus Knot Jade adjustable bracelet pairs jade with braided string and closes with an adjustable cord. It is sized for wrists from 15 to 19 cm (5.9 to 7.5 inches), so check that range against your bare wrist. The handmade cords may vary slightly in color between batches. “Luck” in the title reads as a customary good wish, not a promise of results.
Cyan jade closed bangle
The Cyan Jade Longevity Blessing Bangle is cyan jade, with inner diameters of 53, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62 and 64 mm. Compare these with your hand measurement. If the fit is close, the listing mentions that a little soap, detergent or lubricant on the hand makes it easier to put on. We use “Longevity Blessing” as a traditional wish, never as a guarantee.
Plum Flower adjustable bangle
The 925 Sterling Silver Plum Flower adjustable bangle is 925 sterling silver. The bracelet diameter is 5.4 cm for the Plum Flower option and 5.64 cm for the Plum Flower & Crystal option. Its size is adjustable, but no adjustment range is supplied. “Blessing” in the full name is a traditional wish, not an assurance of results.
White and red agate quadruple wrap
The 108 Mala Beads quadruple wrap bracelet has 108 beads on premium elastic string, combining 6 mm white agate with red agate. Its inner perimeter is 70 cm; the recommended wrist circumference for four wraps is 15.5 cm. The tassel length is 7 cm. Materials are 925 sterling silver plated gold, white agate and red agate. “Protection” in its full name represents a traditional wish, not guaranteed protection.
Keep your wrist measurement and, for a closed bangle, your hand width together. Match those numbers to the specific closure and size description before choosing an option.
